Best sweet peppers for hot humid Southeast Louisiana

bigoledude(SE Louisiana)March 7, 2011

I have had two years of the worst sweet pepper production ever!

What bell and non-bell sweet peppers are performing best for y'all in hot and humid climates?

Mine are planted in-ground, in sandy-ish soil. Still adding compost every season in order to achieve better moisture retention.

Any advice on cultural/growing techniques that seem to make a difference would be great.

Cubanelle do well here in Florida. I think any pepper will grow in the south so long as you keep it shaded in the summer.

Concur, LSU has a long list of recommended varieties which includes the bells, Jupiter, King Arthur, Camelot, Aristotle, Plato, Valentia etc. Non bells include Giant marconi, Cubanelle, Banana Supreme, Gypsy etc.

I had great results with the round, squat, pimento type peppers I got from Tomato Grower's Supply. They were called Pritavit Hybrid (and another that they seem to no longer carry). Seed Saver's Exchange has something similar -- looks like a tomato. Nice thick, sweet flesh. Prolific producer and few blemishes. Pretty. : ) I put compost/manure around the plants and mulched with old leaves and grass clipping. Supplied the whole neighborhood and had a freezer full by end of year.
