Crab Apple leaf disease

missminni(6B)May 29, 2011

let me preface this by saying that I'm in the process of adjusting a newly installed drip system and we had a solid week of rain about a week ago followed by a hot, sunny week and probably too much watering from my un-perfected drip system. My garden is on the roof in containers. A few have leaf problems.

this is my crab apple. I have two and they both seem to have it, one to a lesser degree than the other. This was not an overnight thing. It's been happening little by little although I believe I noticed it after moving them from the shade into a sunnier spot. I might have just noticed it more because of the sun.

anyway...I've sprayed with neem oil but it doesn't seem to help. One of them I practically defoliated. The leave came back fine but as they got larger they got the spots again.

Picture attached...thanks in advance for advice...

With all your rooftop trees in 3-ft square containers, I suspect the problem is environmental and related to water -- too much or too little. Browning is often from too little.

You don't say how long the trees have been in the same container, or the tree size. Nor what they're planted in. It also helps to know about wind , sun & prevailing humidity.

okay by now you know the weather story from my other two posts. The same goes for the crab apple. It's about 2 years old. hasn't flowered yet. started it from a twig from Arbor day org.
It's in a smaller cedar container...maybe 18" square. It was in a shadier spot and I moved it to a sunnier one about a week ago. Then the problem became apparent.
more pictures here...thanks again

Don't see any disease. The brown is too little to be concerned about. The distorted/torn leaves may be due to winds on the rooftop?
