hungry 2 cm caterpillar ID- munching on my pansies

this 2 cm larvae loves my pansies and violets. it's also nibbled some roses as well. it defensively rolls up into a ball and drops into the ground to camouflage itself. This little guy is voracious and I'm wondering what it is and if it is a pest or a beneficial, protected or endangered species. thanks.

Resembles a caterpillar but is instead a sawfly.

It's a leaf-eating pest.
