Anyone growing Northern Red Oak

greatplainsturf(6/7 OK)August 16, 2011

I'm looking to plant a Northern red oak in my lawn in Edmond. I know there are some around, but what are your experiences with this tree for those who have them. Do they grow relatively quickly. I have a shumard already but want to add something different.

I grow Texas red oak. That is smaller tree with a lacier leaf than the Shumard. It has a graceful more delecate form than the magestic Shumard. It is also much more drought hardy and can live in caliche and on hot rocks. Around here , the Q. shumardi is good for bottom land. It will intergrade with each other so in the natural range one often see tham and can't tell if a tree is one or the other.
