Help ID garden bug that's eating my mums

happygardener23May 18, 2009

Noticed these teeny tiny beetles making a mess out of my mums. I can't seem to figure out what it is or what to do about it (would welcome some suggestions for organic treatments).

Thanks for any help (crossing fingers that photo uploads and isn't huge-I tried to reduce it, I swear!)

Looks lika a four lined plant bug nymph, much different from the adult.

Here is a link that might be useful:

Good call, hortster. Happy, you might want to chase after these nymphs before they get their wings and are a lot more mobile. Hand removal or applications of insecticidal soap would help. You might want to look for eggs, too, and remove them before they hatch.

That's them. From what I read, it sounds like it might be easiest for me to just cut the plants all the way back, toss the infected stuff, and by the time the plant grows back the four lined plant bug season may have passed. Does that sound like a reasonable route, or should I just cut off the parts with the eggs (the foamy looking stuff, right?) and active buggers?

See Rhizo's suggestion. Cutting of the foliage is not reasonable because the bugs will still be there and your plant will be even more stressed.

Smish with fingers then wash off with insecticidal soap. You will have bugs and bad leaves. Everyone has bad hair days ever so often.
