The Immortal BJ

DMForcier(8 DFW)March 21, 2013

Some of you already know the story behind this pepper: how the seed case - and cotyledons - were ripped off it. How it was then eaten by a hyperactive little cat and replanted - essentially without roots. How it was baked in the Great Seed Starter Flat Disaster that killed 95% of the residents. How it was transplanted far too young when its housing development was demolished.

Well, here it is today. Named, as you can see, "Immortal Beloved".

Maybe I should play Beethoven for it now? The Eroica !

It's amazing what these little guys can live through. Congrats on not giving up. Hopefully you will be rewarded with numerous "EVIL" pods.

It made it to true leaves, what a little trooper!
How about playing that Chumbawunga Tubthumping song, "I get knocked down..." Or if you like Queen, "we are the champions, my friend..."

Give me a little while, I could totally whip up a mix tape for your immortal beloved! ;)

Queen is good. For some reason I've never been able to stand Peter Frampton on his own, not to say that the patient wouldn't like it. I was also thinking Machine Head (Deep Purple) would get its little motor running.

While you mix, I'll be rigging up some tiny headphones.

In this life, the tread of Doom may be silent as little cat feet, but it is always there in the background.

Cats don't eat plants. I have to assume it's a fuzzy cow.

Kitty has excellent taste! She's not eating Immortal, is she?

No, she already ate it.

Here she was not actually munching, but rubbing her face on plants pots and dirt. She has a thing for dirt. Makes re-potting especially slow.

I see you have a soft spot for kitty bad behavior as well... Mine runs all over with her claws out. Hell on the wood floors, good thing I love her, especially when she gets a little extra vinegar and scales the wall at the end of the hall.

Has the IB BJ truly met its kitty maker or were you being funny?

Try telling that to mine. I have one that nibbles on my onion leaves. Come to think of it, he acts like a dog.

I had one - a big polydact - that wagged his tail like a dog when he was happy to see you. But a cat tail isn't stiff like a dog tail so it looked like he had a slow furry snake on his butt. The message was clear, though.

sunni, re-read the first post. The way-too-cute and soon-to-be-extinct bovine was the second plague upon Our Hero. First, seed case eclampsia -> no leaves. Second, cat lunch -> no roots. Then the Angel of Death by Burning passed over.

Perhaps the little bhut has nine lives. The little cat has at least that many (and is rapidly using them up!)

I thought you were saying the cat snacked on it AGAIN! (Bad cat!) I've become oddly attached to the little plant.

I up-potted it today. It actually has some decent roots and looks like it will survive. Knock wood.

Immortal Beloved eventually became my main bhut jolokia plant. It trailed the others in size and vigor and they got sold off, but I wouldn't sell the little trooper. Then it came alive, growing up and cascading down about 3 feet, with a whole raft of pods. Nice plant.

I have kept it active so far this winter. But the Angel of Death by Ice passed this way and there may eventually be another corpse on the compost pile. However, Something there is that favors this plant and I will wait until full Spring before signing the certificate.

St. Peter and the Douglah also got bit - more than once - and are down to main stems. St. Peter's (big) stem feels solid, it is in a bigger pot, and I think it will survive. Douglah's pot is small but the stem feels solid. It may have a chance.

Please add them to your prayers.

To close this out --> everybody dead as doorknobs.

Immortal Beloved had green stems below the soil line and I had hopes that the warm weather would perk it up, but instead they just turned brown.

---
Ironically, I have a velvet-leaf philodendron that was in with the peppers. Philodendrons are considerably less hardy than peppers and this one froze off - all but one stem in the corner of the pot. It remained green and remains green to this day - yet resolutely refuses to put out a single leaf! I don't know what to make of it.
