diseased holly, identity and help!

emmyt(z6a PA)June 2, 2011

Hello. About half of my large holly bush is turning brown and has what looks like some kind of insect larva on the backs of the leaves.

Can anyone help identify what it is and what I can do about it?

Scale. Your County Extension Office likely has a publication detailing approved treatment in your area.

The scale insect is the small tan spot. The elongated white thing is its egg case.

Depending upon the shrub's size, begin by physically eradicating what you see.

Thanks. It's a large, dense bush, and it looks like the scale is all the way onto the main trunks, so unless there's a treatment I may have to dig out the whole thing. :-(
