Ants! Is this normal??

ms_minnamouse(7a)June 8, 2011

Each year, we seem to be getting more and more little ants. I don't know what species.

You can't put your foot down without it landing on an ant hill.

You can't dig up a plant without finding ants in the roots and have them come swarming out. You can't dig a new hole for a plant without going through ant colonies.

They're in everything, the garage, hose reels, the shed, EVERYTHING.

This year we had more make it into the house than ever.

We are inundated with ants... This amount really can't be normal, can it?

Is there anything that we can do? It's 2.5 acres.

I'd snatch some up in a container and take them to your extension office to send off for ID. Ask them if they want them preserved (like in alcohol) or by which method they wish them delivered.

No, that is not 'normal'.

Thanks for not thinking I'm exaggerating. Good advice to bring them in. I have some plants I need to get IDed so great timing.

Ants, outside in the yard, are generally not a problem. The one exception would be the Imported Fire Ant. All ants are part of Ma Natures recycling machine and whilethey might be an annoyance there is no really good reason to put down poisons, or spray poisons, to try and eliminate them because you won't. If you get rid of an ants nest another colony will move in to replace it.
