Squirrel Eating Mushrooms

justme4now(7)June 15, 2010

This .. I know is an odd question and I couldn't figure out exactly which forum was the most appropriate to post it to so-o-o .. "You Won"! 8)

A lot of folks DO look upon squirrels as a pest but I kinda get a kick out of watching them.

I have never seen a squirrel eat a back-yard mushroom .. until today!

I don't know what kind of mushroom this would be but I guess that it is the typical, growing over buried, dead wood type that grows in forested areas. (my home is in a 'forest')

I walked around looking for a 'dead squirrel' a few hours after I saw what he was eating but .. no carcases!?

Is this normal .. for squirrels to eat mushrooms?

Will I be picking up dead squirrels .. maybe tomorrow?

I've never seen a squirrel eat schrooms, but why not? I'll guess that they learn which ones are delectable and enjoy them as much as we would.

Not that I would follow their example, though. Not until the mushrooms were carefully identified.

I'm a mushroomer and I compete with the squirrels all the time, part of the deal. They know what to eat and what to leave alone.

It's important to know that what's safe for squirrels may not be for people.

Just happened upon this thread while searching for squirrel deterrents....

I've seen gnaw-marks on mushrooms - even amanita muscaria and one amanita verosa - which are deadly to humans. I left 'em, cause i was hoping it would make a dent in the local squirrel population.

Nope. Squirrels are unaffected apparently....
