Beetle Identification

ewe105July 22, 2014

This is the second time I have seen this beetle on my patio. Any idea what it is? It's gigantic (compared to other beetles in my region - outside of Philadelphia) and I have never seen one like it. For the first time, I have had a problem with Japanese beetles this year on my roses, so maybe it's an active year for beetles in my area. I would like to know what type of beetle (or whatever kind of bug) it is so I know whether it is considered a pest... and out of sheer curiousity.

Thanks!
Ed

That's the Grapevine Beetle, Pelidnota punctata. They really aren't considered a pest, even for their preferred host, grape vines and virginia creeper.

Some may know this beetle as a spotted junebug. It's a scarab and the larvae (grubs) feed on rotting wood.

I'd not put this beetle in the 'pest' category.

Bingo, thanks. I have never seen anything like it, but (according to Wikipedia) it's not uncommon in eastern PA.
