any idea what's on these crocosmia?

I saw these insects on some orange crocosmia. I couldn't tell if they were eating the plants or just hanging around. They are about the size of a dog tick and are very fast (which makes me think they are beneficial and not eating the plant). It was difficult to get a good picture because of the light, but you can see them clustered right near (I assume) their egg mass).

Thanks!

Look like stink bugs. Some are beneficial, some aren't. Don't know which you have.

Where do you live?

I'm in New Jersey. I think you're right. After googling "stink bug nymph" I found the below link. That's pretty close to what I saw. If they're still there tomorrow I'll take a closer look. They did seem solid black, but the light was poor and it was beginning to rain so I didn't stay to examine them closely. We were trying to decide whether to leave them or get rid of them.

Here is a link that might be useful: stink bug nymph

Check up for info about BMSB, the brown marmorated stink bug. If that's what you have either squish or drown them, immediately!
