Mold or fungus in gritty mix?

AKlutheJuly 27, 2014

I posted this in the succulents/cacti forum since it's affecting my succulents/cacti...but I thought maybe some general knowledge might be helpful.

I've got this fuzzy gunk with small little spheres(all on plants purchased from the same place) growing in/clogging the gritty mix I potted them in. They've been in this mix for 6-8 months.

Anyone experience this? Is there any hope beyond 'nuking the site from orbit'?

"Fuzzy stuff" like that is usually a fungus which most often need a fairly moist rather high level of organic matter soil mix to live and grow in.

when you get to the bottom of a bag of perlite ....

there is a lot of perlite dust ...

and frankly.. on this pic... i dont see anything but fine ground perlite ...

maybe i am missing what you are discussing...

touch it.. rub it in your fingers .... is it gritty ???? or slimey ...

I haven't had a chance to touch it yet, but I can guarantee it's not perlite. There's no perlite in this mix.

It looks to be all around the roots of some of my plants....
