Disease on a maple tree?

katiem(6)July 10, 2007

My mother-in-law has a 30yo maple tree. We noticed that the leaves have tiny green circular bumps, some are red, all over. They're on most of the leaves, but not on the new growth. The barks on the trunk has been peeling for a while, but I'm not sure if it's a common characteristic of old trees.

Does this sound like a disease? Other than that, the tree seems to be doing well. I can try to take pictures if it helps.

Likely leaf galls. If so, won't affet the tree's health.

If the exfoliation is still a concern, -- the bumps do sound like leaf gall -- you might try an ask extension. They usually have dedicated tree boards where a horticulturalist will answer your question. I use U of I.

The bumps are galls and, as said, not a problem.

The peeling bark is a potential problem but isn't related to the bumpy leaves. Need more info about the tree, its site, and care to know about the peeling bark. Pictures would definitely help.

Beyond that, call a certified arborist or two for an onsite evaluation and suggested management.
