We got 2.5" of rain this weekend. Will my sweet potatoes crack if I leave them in the ground?
It's likely if it was very dry and they had started to cure. If you're afraid they will, you can dig now as it is so late in the season. On the other hand, if you leave them and wait to dig right after the first light frost, the cracks will cure and it won't hurt their edibility, only the ease of washing.
I agree with Dorothy that they're likely to crack, but I'd leave them anyway. The new growth you'll get from that much rainfall would be nice to have and the cracks aren't that harmful---really just cosmetic. That's assuming your nighttime temps are still pretty good. I don't usually dig sweet potatoes until November, but my part of the state likely stays warm a couple weeks later than yours does.
