Spider Mites on Ginger

sharvil6August 23, 2010

Alright so i have a ginger plant in a pot sitting on my front porch (Michigan)

Its done really well and is quite large

But about 2 weeks ago i noticed the leaves had the spots and webbing that told me my ginger plant had spider mites. So i did some research and found misting the plant with water would help. So misted it once a day for a few days and it seemed to help. But then i stopped for one day and the webbing was back.

So then i switched and started to mist it with 1 part rubbing alcohol and 1 part water. Which, same story, started out helping but didn't last.

I don't really want to BUY any insecticides or nything...

any ideas???

The water misting does very little to get rid of the mites, but simply helps create the kind of environment they don't like. Stronger water applications might help more than 'misting'.

A very bad mite infestation take a while to conquer. Keep up with alcohol mists, making sure to get into the nooks and crannies, on the underside of the leaves, etc.

Since you aren't going to purchase anything, I won't recommend insecticidal soap, Neem oil, or other horticultural oils. ;-)

Too many ppl ignore the forum directions. Do a search. They will need better control if you like your plants and want to keep them.

@rhizo - thanks so much for your quick reply and help. haha and the only reason i didn't want to buy anything is because here in michigan i expect my ginger plant to go dormant pretty soon so i didn't think i wanted to buy an insecticide just for another month. I'll consider it tho if the alcohol doesn't help.
@taz - i did search the forum actually, but the other posts all came down to the same solution... buy an insecticide. So i wanted to post something more specific to my situation. I'm sorry if this was breaking the "forum directions"

Yes dear. They are ignoring good advice and IMO the only way to control them other than very toxic stuff or kimmsr's way of hypnosis on predators lol.

If you don't want to buy neem(very cheap) and Joy or Dawn dishwashing liquid(also very cheap) then buy some lacewings(much more expensive) or live with the loss. JMO
