Thoughts on Spanish Spice

fair0906(z5 Colo)May 26, 2006

Has anyone got experience with Spanish Spice. I picked up a plant by accident (I thought I was grabbing a Gypsy). Some catalogs list it as sweet, others as hot (but very low heat). Is it worth the space in my garden?

Also, who grows Big Chile? Thoughts on this variety?

Spanish Spice is my favorite pepper of it's type. It has replaced both Cubanelle and Gypsy in my garden. It's a hybrid so saving seed isn't really an option.

Incredible flavor that can have just the slightest 'bite' to it.

Chunked into salads in both green and mature red stage is most excellent.

I would most like to grow peppers that are open-pollenated rather than hybrid, but this one is an exception.

Be sure and grill a few pods as fire really brings out the flavor.
