Ants, Ticks - what about Melaleuca Mulch

downsouth1993(7A/B)September 5, 2006

Hi All,

We made the decision to landscape our yard with 1/2 plantings and pine bark mulch and the other 1/2 with grass and plantings (we have dogs - so grass does not grow in some areas). I noticed now we have ant infestations and also some ticks. Do ants and ticks live in pine bark - I know we have to be careful with it not touching the house as far as termites go... but what about the ants and ticks. It just seems since we've done this landscaping we have more pests. Also, I am investigating Melaleuca Mulch - I know it will be much pricier, but it seems like pests are deterred by it. Does anyone know if it is toxic to dogs, if they happen to chew on it. My one dog tends to chew a bit on large pine bark chunks.

Thanks in advance for your input

Pat

I find nothing which indicates that melaleuca mulch would be toxic to your animals.

Ask your vet.

I don't see how there could be any connection between mulch and ticks. They are animal parasites. Ants do not live in pine bark but usually nest in soil or decaying wood. They could nest in the soil under the mulch, but not in the mulch.
