New lawn but would like wildflowers instead

firstlawn(z7 GA)March 6, 2004

JUST MOVED INTO A NEW SUBDIVISION WHERE THE BUILDER ESTABLISHED THE LAWNS LAST SUMMER. HAVE A NICE SIZED HILLSIDE THAT SLOPES INTO MY FRONT YARD. DESPERATELY NEED SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO SEED THE HILL AND MY FRONT YARD WITH PERENNIAL WILDFOWERS AND GRASSES. I WOULD LIKE SOMETHING THAT STAYS EVERGREEN IN THE WINTER, BUT GIVES ME LOTS OF COLOR AND VARIETY. THE EXISTING GRASS HAS NOT BEEN FERTILIZED OR MOWED MUCH. YOU ALL SEEM SO INFORMED THIS IS MY FIRST STOP IN MY INVESTIGATIONS AND ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Do a search on Garden Web (search button at bottom of page)using "wildflower meadow" and "prairie garden" as search words. You will get many hits and lots of tips.

Prairie Moon Nursery, (search Google) has a great on line catalogue and a very detailed description of how to convert grass to meadow.

Finally, for suggested plants and sources for your area, check with the Georgia Native Plant Society, link below.
