Too Good to Be True Weather for Gardeners

macgregor(6MA)March 19, 2012

What glorious weather we have been having here in Massachusetts.

Actually planted carrots, lettuce, leeks and radishes yesterday, and transplanted some boxwoods to the entrance of the garden today. I've never planted anything this early but supposedly I can so I did. Is that crazy or what?

It seems incredible to have the earth so easy to rake and be able to dig deeply enough to put shrubs in.

It feels like Spring is here! I think it's a present, to hold us over until every day is like this!

Hi Lavender Lass,

Sorry if my post made you feel badly; this weather we are having is SO unusual, a real freak heatwave. We will have a different scenario soon I'm sure ("if you don't like the weather in New England, just wait a minute.") Farmer's Almanac says we will have frost as late as end of April. We've had snow in April here, so I have no illusions...

Thank you for sharing your wintry scene, I always love your photos. You surely are in good company with your weather. Hang in there, before you know it things will be green and lovely and you'll be out there, trowel in hand!

MacGregor- You didn't make me feel bad...I'm just impatient! LOL

Tomorrow is supposed to be our last day of snow and by Friday, it's hopefully going to be sunny and almost 50 degrees. Although it seems to take forever, we should be able to start gardening, once the clay dries out a bit :)

Mine is not like that today but this week we went back down to a low of 19. We are back in the upswing and lows are above freezing but I dare not believe they will stay that way. I did put walls of water around some of my small roses and they had leafed out and tolerated the 20 just fine. Unfortunately, last night the deer got to 3 others.

Yuk! Winter has arrived in sunny California!
After a drought-like winter, it's been raining for a couple of weeks straight! We usually have little or no rain after April 1st! It's rather Oregon-like! LOL
Oh well, I won't have to worry about watering for awhile! Nancy
