plant id

Can you please help me id this plant? It's been recently introduced in masses along a Dutch roadside and is absolutely stunning -- a sea of purple approximately a meter high (1 yard). The stems are slightly prickly.

Many thanks.

Many thanks! I might just have to adopt this "weed" into my garden. Along the roadside it's stunning.
