Patience with cold-damaged palms.
I accidentally forgot to move in one of the more tropical palms in the collection--a Spindle Palm (Hyophorbe)--it was sitting behind the garage. For those of you that are familiar with the species, this is one gorgeous palm that does quite well inside during the winter season. It lost all its leaves and the trunk even felt like some ice was forming just beneath the surface. I thought for sure it was was dead and temporarily moved it next to my basement furnace until I was ready to compost it. It might have been sitting there for a week or so. Well, this morning (while adding water to the furnace), I noticed that a bright green leaf was starting to emerge. I was really surprised. Moral of the story is that if your palms got frostbite from the arctic temps a few weeks ago, all is not necessarily lost.--Give them some time and they just might surprise you.
