Peppermint Plants growing/ Cold Frame Gardens

scarletdaisies(6)October 16, 2009

It's getting down hear 40 degrees at night, but I've put out some seeds for the cold frame I'm building, and to my surprise there are little mint leaves in my container!

I also have lavender, but no dice, the potatoes are sprouting and about to be put in their tower and covered with clear plastic! The season is not over for me yet! I'm looking forward to experimenting on what I can do in the winter.

The cooler weather will allow me to grow lettuces, peas, and cabbages that wouldn't grow in our zone 7 hot sun!

Does anyone have any cold frame gardens already producing?

This is my first year with a fall/winter garden. Our nights have been in the forties some but no frost yet. Here is what I have planted right now: turnip greens, collards, kale, 6 kinds of lettuces, carrots, beets, cabbage, chard. The greens are large enough to harvest, but I will wait to do so until after some frosts sweeten the leaves. The other crops are well underway but not quite ready to pick yet. I plan to use floating row covers over hoops throughout the winter, since I have read that cold frames can/do get entirely too hot here in my southern climate. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.
