Wave Easy Red Petunia

lorraine644(Z5 Ont Canada)April 6, 2006

Has anyone grown this plant. This is the first year it has been available in Canada. I have ordered it & plan to use it for 21" moss baskets for a neighbouring village. The theme is to be red & white. So I am using surfinia white petunia, a licorice plant in the middle, and the red Wave. I know that all the waves perform differently. The Blue Easy Wave was not as vigorous as the Purple, and the Salmon was quite compact.

Where does the Red fit in. Would love it if it performed like the Purple Wave. Volunteers are prepared to clip the baskets every third week to keep them bushy. I am also thinking of adding 2 Plectranthus Varigated at the edges, to keep the Red growing up & then flowing down.

Any comments would really be appreciated.

I drive by a home with good landscaping frequently. An old couple that likes plants. They have a buried row boat in their front yard with one red WAVE spreading 3 ft. I had to ask. It was awesome. That was last year. I got red wave plugs this year and had to pick off a lot of rotten leaves.
They were the worst plugs received. Is red wave good or not?

I think Easy Wave Red falls in the middle as far as vigor. The color leaves a little bit to be desired, I have no doubt that PanAm seed will improve this red in future years. I don't think that you can at all hope it will be as vigorous as the original Purple Wave. PP

What do you growers think is the best wave petunia for hanging baskets? I want something that will stay mounded and not get real tall, but will cascade down the basket easily. I tried Tidal Waves last year and they grew over 2 ft. tall, even with cutting them back 4 times thru the summer. Also tried shock waves and they were tiny blooms and slow growing. Any advice?
