Muscadine grape cuttings

jolj(7b/8a)February 25, 2011

Muscadine (Southern Grape).

I pruned about 15 vines for a friend & have over 100 cuttings in the refrigerator.

How would you root them?

I have rooting dust with Indole-3-butyric acid...0.1% from "Green Light".

I have rooted flowering shrubs & trees, a few blue berries.

Grape cuttings are usually placed in well draining soil in late fall/early winter and will usually grow roots by May/June. I would plant them in pots outdoors now. Wait until you see significant growth before checking for root growth in late spring, early summer. I usually put about 5 cuttings in a gallon pot and get at least an 80% success rate. I've never left it this late, but will go out tomorrow and take some cuttings when I prune the grapes and try.

Hey Guys, quick question for you all. I had 4 great growing muscadine vines that were probably 3 to 4 year old vines and recently had one die on me over the winter. I cut down the vine and checked for root rot but the root system was fine and showed no signs of a problem. The weird thing is that he 3 other vines are less than 3 feet away( didn't know they would grow that great or would have spread them out) and they are in full swing this year producing more than ever. Any ideas on what could have happened? Also I'm trying to make new vines with the new growth and have used root hormone but with no success. Should I wait until the winter time and try to get new vines? Thanks for he help.
