little yellow wasp looking thing hovering around my pepper plant

Spongey600July 17, 2011

I noticed this this morning, should i be worried and kill it? or is it a beneficial little guy?

on a side note, all my flowering pepper plants are starting to produce peppers except my devils tongue, its putting out flowers but not one has set a pod. any ideas on why?

Don't know about the little wasp...
I see them, too, but I've never associated them with damage.

Once the plant has critical mass, it'll begin setting pods.
It's just a waiting game.

thanks Josh! i was watching the wasp walk around on the leaves and it was touching its stinger on the leaves, as it was hovering around it would not land on certain plants but i did notice that the plants that it would land on are the ones that i have seen aphids on recently. i wonder if it is hunting them.....HMMM

Syrphid Flies- hover flies - good bugs.
The early stage of it eats aphids etc.

Search Syrphid fly larva on the site linked below.

On my plants they lay green teardrop shaped cacoons that turm into the fly.
The cacoons don't hang like butterfly cacoons.
The kind of fly around here makes green cacoons on the top of leaves, laying flat on top with the fat part above and the pointed end below.
The first cacoon I found a couple years ago I put in a jar because it was so small and I was wondering what it was.
It only took a few days for a fly to come out.
