Grafting ?

brandond(6)May 26, 2009

I want to try my hand at grafting. I have a couple sand cherry bushes. I also have some peach, plum, and cherry trees. I have heard stone fruits can be grafted together. Will the sand cherry have a good rootstock for the stone fruit scions. I was also wondering if a sweet cherry scion can be used with the sand cherry rootstock. Im just looking for some dwarfing style bushes. thanks

prunus besseyi or western sand cherry can be used for a rootstock. i don't see why it wouldn't work for sweet cherries, although fruit size and amount might decrease. grafting should be done when the rootstock is growing but the scions are dormant. usually very early spring.
