Proprogating crab apple tree

Marilyn_MO(5b)July 21, 2005

A friend has given me several bags of crab apples which I am using for jelly. How do I proprogate a new tree from this crab apple tree. I don't know what type of crabapple it is--it's a huge tree with small to medium sized crab apples which makes the best jelly you ever ate! Also we are in a very dry period, would the fruit be more juciy if he watered the tree? M_MO

Typically you use a cleft graft in late winter. Graft scions of the tree onto apple seedlings. This is a really easy process with apples, and you generally get good percentages of takes.

I always liked to use seedlings from yellow delicious apples as rootstock as they are quite uniform in properties, but most any seedlings will work. Look around the tree and find some.
