What to do once a plant roots?

cbusgirl(6)July 28, 2012

I'm trying to propagate butterfly bush (by cuttings that I started about a week ago) and hydrangea (by layering, started about a month ago) and I have never done either before. I'm going to be extremely optimistic and assume that everything will survive and root as I hope it will. :) So when (if) that happens, what do I do next? Do I move the tiny little plants to their permanent homes this fall (September, maybe?) and hope that they survive the winter? Do I pot them up for the winter and plant in spring? Thank you so much for any input!

Keep them potted up until spring. Since you are in Ohio, I would pile about a foot of pine straw on them, if left outdoors in a protected area or you can put them in the garage and plant them in the spring. Don't forget to water them once in a while if you bring them in.

Thanks kayjones! I think I will move them into the garage if they do indeed root. Ken, I saw that post, but it seemed that person was pretty sure their cuttings needed to be transplanted soon, and since mine are just started (and since I have no idea what I'm doing!) I'm NOT sure what I should do about the timing of transplanting vs. something else. Some helpful stuff in that post, though, thanks!
