Planting Redbud seeds

revleroySeptember 16, 2007

I have a MN strain Redbud tree (Cercis Canadensis) that seems to have developed some seed pods. I'm interested in getting them to sprout? Anyone know how to do this? I was thinking:

Dry up pods

Collect seeds

Pot them up in damp moss

Leave them outside for winter in moss and wrapped in saran wrap

Hope for the best?

Am I way off on this?

Thanks for any help.

the birds plant them all over my yard ... i have pure sand.. with hardwood mulch ... meaning.. they do very well in very high drainage... really dryish environment ... which would be contrary to damp moss ....

presuming you have a plethora of seeds ... experiment... try planting a line of them directly under your tree that seems to be very happy ... transplant in spring if successful ...

then try a couple variations in pots .... not just the moss ...

good luck

PS: if you don't succeed ... don't worry.. once your tree starts seedling.. it wont be long before you are pulling out volunteers all over your yard .... its easy to ID the heart shaped leaves ...
