I am trying to propagate some alstroemeria plants by dividing them and all I could get are just sprouts without roots. Will roots grow from the cutting or should I have some roots?

I have been successful with just putting small trowel at edge of plant, and going down really deep, and then replanting in a pot with some potting compost. Hasn't failed yet for me. Hope that helps. My alstromerias are one of the most successful plants in my borders.
