Cowhorn pepper gave me a rush?

SoCarRob (Zone 7)August 6, 2014

So I went out and picked a green cowhorn off my plant a bit ago. I ate it fresh instead of my usual cooking it in olive oil and to mu surprise it was hot. And I mean really hot! So much so that I got light headed. I've never experienced that before from eating a pepper. Cowhorns aren't supposed to be that hot. 20 minutes later and I could still feel the heat. Strange from a pod that isn't supposed to be much hotter than a jalapeno.

Never grew cowhorn. I heard they were not hot so maybe yours came out as a hybrid or maybe the plant was stressed and produced hotter pods.

Got a picture?

My grandparents grew them, I remember getting a hot one every now and then.

Looks like a cayenne to me. Like a Joe's Long.

I looked those up, but these appear to be much thicker than those. However the heat level doesn't match what a cowhorn should be. This is a bonnie plants "cowhorn pepper" and it does match what they have on their website as far as appearance. So who knows, could be a cross or my growing conditions could have made it hotter than normal, or it could have been mislabeled. Either way they are very tasty!
