What's happening?

sesakasoMay 9, 2013

I got 2 mini rose bushes on Valentines Day from Walgreens. About a week later one died completely, but the other seemed to be holding on. I read on here that I need to transplant and separate the plants that were in the pot(which turned out to be 5 of them, 4 living and 1 dead). By the time I did that, each plant had a dark line going all the way up the stem. They are all getting new leaves and all their roots seemed healthy. Can anyone tell me what this dark line is, if its something I should worry about, and any other care tips as these are my first mini roses ever. I'll try to post some pictures of them on here to hopefully show what I'm talking about. I only know how to post one at a time though. Thanks in advance!

Unlike some here, I'm not an expert, but they look healthy to me. Some roses come with reddish leaves. A lot actually. good luck

I am no expert either, but I think the roots might be hurt during the change.

For future reference it is not necessary to separate the rootlings. And doing so always injures the root systems of these small plants. I have tried it myself several times and always loose most or all of them. Now I just pot up the entire pot, as one plant, disturbing the root ball as little as possible. I haven't lost one since starting this. The resulting plant is much larger and healthier.

The dark line is not a good sign. It usually means the cane is dying back. But since they are getting new leaves I'd just leave them alone for now. Keep them watered but do not feed them. They're stressed out and need time to recuperate and build new roots. Put them in a place that gets good morning sun and let them rest.

Interesting I have better luck when I separate them. But it is a very delicate operation for me.

It depends on persons. I have always carefully separate them. But for some other characters, the operation" would not normally be done in a delicate way.

Thanks everyone! They are all getting new leaves now and the black on the stalk of the biggest one is turning green again. They were so pretty when I bought them an can't wait to see them bloom again!

sesakaso, where do you live in Illinois? I live in Decatur, I have 465 roses. There are a lot of sources of good miniature roses thru our Rose Society's plus a lot of good rosarian's all over our state who can help you!
