plant ID - rhododendon?

mstywoods(z5, Westminster, CO)April 19, 2012

There is a bush in our yard that I'd love to know what type of plant it is. It flowers in spring, and is right now. We've been letting it grow upwards, so it is now about 5-6 ft tall, and about the same across (been trying to keep it trimmed so it grows up more than out).

Here's a few pics - it kind of looks like rhododendron to me, but not sure if those grow here in Colorado. Any guesses?!

I would guess a flowering quince.

Hi Misty,

Cheryl (from Paulino's) was here when I saw your post so I asked her what it was and she thought it was flowering quince too, so I googled it and came up with the linked search page!

Congrats, Connie! You get the prize!

P.S. I didn't know they got that big!!!

Flowering quince, for sure!

I like them a lot. They bloom just about the same time as forsythia, maybe a smidge later, but in shades of coral pink instead of yellow.

Some of them will set fruit. They aren't good to eat fresh, but make decent jelly. They are related to the actual fruiting quince.

You are lucky to have a nice, mature, very happy specimen. Enjoy!

Thank you! Yes, I agree - it must be flowering quince :^) I love the blooms, but haven't noticed any fruit. I'll keep my eye out now though, and maybe try some jelly.

I do very little to it, as it's in the far corner of the yard. I've been wanting it to get bigger to help hide the corner of our shed it's in front of, and it's has been doing really well for that. It definitely likes where it's planted!

Thanks all!!
