Old Fashioned Climber - want name!

sirmatthew(4 - Iowa)June 4, 2012

My great-grandmother passed this rose down to my grandmother who passed it down to me. They both called it "Seven Sisters," however, the colors of the flowers remain deep red, and so that would seem to knock that name out of the picture.

It only blooms ONCE a year, and only on last year's growth. I've searched and I've all but given up.

Make sure to expand the image to see the close-up shot of the rose blooms.

Any ideas?

It looks a lot like Dr. Huey to me. Dr. Huey is a once-blooming (in the spring) climber, typically used as rootstock.

I have reverted to Dr. Huey rootstock in my garden as well. Looks exactly the same except that it blooms in sprays. The whole plant is fragrant even when not in bloom. The canes are really big and overgrew the space allotted to them.
