primitive rose

My mother's property has this rose, tumbling over a broken trellis. The plant has very long canes. The flower has a single layer of petals. It looks rather uncultivated, not polyploid, I assume. Could anybody tell me what it is? Perhaps some traditional rose from years gone by?

It was not at its peak on the day of the photo, sorry, but really looked lovely the day before.

It could be a wild rose called r. bracteata, McCartney Rose and some other names. I will put a link below to a description on HelpMeFind and you can click on the photos tab for a couple of pages worth of pictures.

Since you are in Australia, I want you to know that my research indicates that the McCartney Rose does grow in your country (whether or not my guess is correct).

A link below features a discussion featuring several rose growers in Australia, from a forum here on GW that has become so slow I don't recommend it. However, if you look at the "My Page" of the posters, some make it possible to send them an e-mail.

They would probably know most about varieties common to your area:

I see what you mean about the Australian discussion.

Regarding Lord McCartney, Rose Discoverer: Can you please tell me where he went discovering roses? I'd like to know where this "wild" rose is native to.
