Can anyone identify...

This rose was growing in a planting bed when I moved into this house. It puts on beautiful flowers on a very unattractive plant. I'd like to give it a generous pruning but of course I'd like to know what it is so I can do it properly. I have *no* experience with roses. The home is 70 years old so this plant may have been here quite a long time - the stems at the base are enormous. I have removed a few dead sections to improve its appearance but the whole plant needs reshaping. Is anyone familiar with this cultivar? Thank you!

I think it's probably a rose called Dr. Huey which has been used as root stock for a very long time. What ever rose was grafted to it has died off and the Dr. has taken over. It's a very vigorous, once blooming climbing rose. Even if you cut it off to the ground it will probably grow right back. It's up to you if you wish to keep it or dig it out and put in something else.
