Remove thorns?

charleney(8a PNW)April 16, 2007

Do I remove thorns from cuttings. I think I have the method for florist stems, but cannot remember whether I need to remove thorns under rooting medium. Thanks

I don't think you need to remove them for success. I trim the sharp tip off wtih a scissors just to make it easier to handle.

Better not--removal creates a wound that is another opportunity for rot.

I remove the thorns as I feel that it gives another place to root

Okay! So if I remove them...do I use rooting hormone on those spots too?

You probably could put some hormone on them. But, I don't use rooting hormone.

Generally you take off lower leaves and any blossoms; and leave thorns and a small group of leaves toward the top to aid in photosynthesis.
