two rose seed questions

rowsJuly 18, 2007

Hi everyone, I was reading about growing rose from seeds- so I went outside and opened up some rose hips. I have two questions:

1. Are the really dried, shriveled and hardened rose hips any good? Or rather, are the seeds inside still good? They look good, but I know citrus seeds, for instance, go bad if allowed to dry.

2. There seem to be two types of seeds within the hips. Each hip had about five large (say, popcorn kernel size) seeds, but about 30 to 40 smaller seeds (tiny- I'd say a litte larger than a sesame seed). Are both types good seed?

Thanks for the help!

1. Yes.
2. The five large will be fertile. The rest won't.

FYI. What I do is plant them in composted dirt in a flower pot (barely covered) and leave them outside until Jan, or when they first start sprouting, and then bring them in and grow under lights (with a timer 12-18hrs/day). Set out in spring.
