help me save this pepper!

carolineturtle9November 8, 2011

I have a small pot of ornamental peppers at work. Someone with good intentions COMPLETELY overwatered it and now the soil is completely saturated and the pot is really heavy. It's really droopy and I'm afraid I will lose it if I don't transplant it fast. What's your best advice for doing this? I just noticed it today, yesterday I think the plant was fine. Would there be root rot after a day? Are there any challenges to watch out for when transplanting it from sopping wet soil? The plant seems rather fragile and I don't want to damage it. I appreciate your advice, and sorry if my questions seem dumb!

Pull it out, remove all the soil from the roots, re-pot with fresh mix in a container
with drainage, and use a chopstick to work the mix into all the spaces between the roots.
Water the plant in, and then let the mix drain. Don't put the pepper back into direct sun or
intense light - it will need several days to recover. Keep it from moving around too much,
as well, so that the roots will re-establish themselves sooner. After approximately two weeks,
fertilize with a half-strength dose of fertilizer (such as Miracle Grow).
