Sowing carrot seed in October?

gjcoreOctober 19, 2012

With a few empty beds I'm sowing some carrot seeds. The seeds getting kind of old so might as well give it a try. I've had overwintered carrots before and in general they have been good in the spring though some were not.

They will probably sprout but making through the winter might be a question mark. They might also go to seed quickly in springtime.

Has anyone else tried sowing carrot seed at this time of year?

I've only done it in much warmer zones for a winter crop. I'm interested in how it works for you. Good luck.

The carrot experiment seems to be going pretty good so far. Have kept them under a floating row cover.

That looks like it's going to work for you, Greg.

Sure can tell that Colorado gets intense Winter sun from the pictures!

I almost saw the sun, yesterday . . . Not likely to almost see it again for awhile.

The carrot experiment has worked out pretty good so far. Didn't notice that any died over the winter, none are going to seed yet and they taste pretty good.

This is what the bed looks like now

And here is part of today's harvest

That's awesome. I have a single carrot from last year growing and a few of my seed are sprouting. I put in some purple carrot seed. I do hope I get a few of those!
