Rainbow Bush

bambuladyDecember 3, 2004

Hi everyone!

I have a lovely little plant called the rainbow bush, scientific name is portulacaria afra. The only information I've found on it on the web is that it is native to South Africa. The little care card that came with it says it likes bright light and will flower in summer. It has not flowered yet and I've had it since July. Does anyone know how I can get it to flower? It is a very slow grower but appears healthy. It gets full afternoon sun from about 1:00 on 'til sunset. Also, what do its flowers look like?

Thanks a lot,

Hmmm - Here in Phoenix we call them 'Elephant's food'. They're great plants; very easy to grow, but although I've seen pictures of them flowering in their native habitat, I've yet to see one in bloom here, and we use them a lot, both in pots and in the ground. Perhaps in your wetter climate you'll have more luck.

The google.com search, sited at the link below, shows several pictures of the shrub in bloom.
