Recommendation for screening tree

magnolia9August 1, 2013

We are looking for a fast-growing tree that we can plant between our house and our neighbor's to provide screening. We would like something that will end up no more than 15-20 feet tall so we don't have to worry about it falling on the house in a hurricane. We are on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, so the soil is sandy and the air is salty. The yard is in full sun. Thanks!

Oleander grows 15-20 feet tall and is salt tolerant. It is more like a huge shrub than a tree, but that may actually be better as it will provide privacy from the ground up.

Another good option is Pittosporum, which is technically a shrub but which grows to the size you want in my sand on an island near Wilmington. It needs no attention whatsoever, and is evergreen.
