Bluebonnet seed question

magnoliatxFebruary 25, 2005

Hey Folks

Just wondering if anyone out there has had experience on seed snatching and saving bluebonnet seeds here in Texas. I have bought seeds over the years and tried to get them to grow but to no avail.

If anyone has any experiences on growing these beautiful flowers can you please chime in?

Thanks a ton

When I lived in Texas I had luck with growing bluebonnets from packaged seeds. Did you nick the seed first and soak it until it swells up? If not, that's usually the problem. Otherwise, if you have a friend with a patch of bluebonnets, a big shovelful of plants and surrounding dirt transplanted into your yard should give you a wonderful crop in a couple of years. Just don't try this on public land or private land without permission!

When are setting them out? I had the same problem until I asked the local garden center. I was told to cast them in September or plant them in peat pellets no later then november or they won't flower. I have had really good success.
