Saving root crops seeds

Just curious if you save your second year seed bearing plants in your main garden? Or do you need to keep them separate? Do you harvest your beets and replant?

When I save beet seeds I harvest small beets in the fall, trim their tops, and keep them in plastic bags in the fridge. Then I replant the beets in early spring and wait till the seeds are ready to collect. It works with carrots too.
