Need a Salvia that grows well in container and shade

paulsiu(5a)June 9, 2013

My mom lives in a HOA that doesn't allow irrigation and has only a balcony. The balcony gets morning sun only and then shade for the rest of the day. She lives an hour from the bay area and has zone 9a weather. The current plan is to have grow the plant in self-watering container where she just keep topping off. The container size is 16". For fertilizer, she'll use osmocote or something similar.

What Salvia will work in this situation? Red color one is preferred, but other colors are fine, too.

Given that she is going to use a self-watering container, she should use a fast-draining soil, since Salvias have roots that need air.

I'd suggest the following Salvias: buchananii, Wendy's Wish, blepharophylla forms, miniata, chiapensis, and oxyphora
