Broccoli Seed - Help!

Amino_X(z7b AR)March 23, 2007

After harvesting my broccoli last fall I left the plants go rather than pulling them up. With the warm winter we had it bloomed and provided a really nice bouquet of spring through the coldest part of winter.

Well, I noticed that they were looking a bit spindly and thought I'd pull them up to get ready for the spring veggies, but then I noticed that what I thought was spindly twigs were actually SEED PODS!!

I wasn't expecting this and know nothing about harvesting Broccoli seeds. If I remember right the Broccoli I planted last fall was an heirloom variety so I think the seed is viable, but how long do I need to let the seeds mature before harvesting them? I need to start prepping my beds, but I would like to harvest these seeds first.

Thanks for the help.

I saved collard green seeds last year, theyre cousins to broccoli.
I gathered the seeds after the spiky pods turned brownish. If felt like it took forever, but was at least a month.
