What to plant in large dish

simplegreenguyAugust 21, 2014

Hello I ran across this large heavy planting dish at an estate sale, Its quite old and is unglazed pottery. It measures aprox 20 in long 13 in wide and 4 in deep its aprox 3/4 of a inch thick and has a large drain hole in the center. Would this be ok for mixture of sans or should I plant cactus or some other type plants? I really like sans.

Check out Debra Lee Baldwin on Facebook or Youtube. She does some beautiful mounded succulent arrangements, and will show you how. Sansevierias would be great, maybe mixed with some trailing succulents. Have fun with it.

IMVHO, that pot really wants to house a ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata.) I wouldn't put Sans in a pot that shallow, as an opinion.

It depends on the Sansevieria species. I grow several in 2" deep bonsai pots and they do just fine. Some naturally grow in thin soils on top of rocks, they don't mind shallow soils.
Why not try a taller Sansevieria with a small growing Aloe or other succulents toward the front of the pot.
