dividing salvia

I have a couple of salvias that have overgrown the spot they're in. Can or should salvia be divided, and if so when and how is the best way to do it? I'd appreciate anyone who can help me with this problem. I live in Iowa, Zone 4. Thanks!

The meadow sages can be divided only when they have formed a clump of at least 8 inches across at the base. The side shoots that you break off must have a moderately thick forming tap root at least 1/8 inch in diameter and firmly attached.
