problem getting seeds from columbine origami blue

littleonefbJuly 8, 2005

I have been collecting seeds from my columbine plants for several years and have never had a problem till this year with my origami blue columbine. The pod turns brown on the top and starts to open up while the rest of the pod is still very green. I can see black seeds inside, but by the time the entire pod is brown, the seeds are gone, fallen on to the bark mulch underneath the plant. I haven't taken off the pod when it started to open because it was green. Does anyone know if the pods on the origami columbine ripen this way? Should I take the pod off when it is only have brown so I can get seeds? Will the seeds be ripe that way?

thanks in advance for the help.

As long as the seeds are black, they should be viable enough to collect, even if the pod is still partially green. Some plants' pods don't go completely brown, or not brown at all, when the seeds are ripe. Iris pods can still be quite green, and hellebores seem to open up without showing any sign that it is ready!
