Dimorphotheca - African daisy - two types of seeds?

nettasauraJuly 13, 2007

I just found out that dimorphotheca sets two types of seeds on the same seed head. Should I be saving both kinds or are the brown woody ribs sterile? I have only ever seen the round winged seed sold.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Netta,
I have a commercial pkg. with the brown woody ribs so they better not be sterile, lol.
Here's a good page for you. It say it makes 2 kinds of seeds. That is what the latin name means! I've never heard of such a thing before this post.

Here is a link that might be useful: The Seed Site Dimorphotheca page

Remy ....that's where I got the info in the first place...if you have a pack of commercial seed with the woody ribs (I think they kinda look like mini rattlesnake rattles) then they better be worth keeping.

Well, I am collecting both, but threw away some of those woody ribs before I found that out...thought they were chaff!

Totally crazy!
